Race: Burlingame Crit
Date: June 26, 2005
Finish: Pulled
Category:4/5
Field: 90
Teammates: None
Today I raced the Burlingame crit. Our start time for the 4/5s was a 7. It
was a good well organized crit on a flat 6 corner course in downtown
Burlingame. This was the second race I've done with the adult field. After I
reg'd, I rode the course a few laps, and rode the trainer until 10 minutes
till the start. I rode a couple more laps before the start and lined up. I
had a pretty good start position, right up near the front on the side. The
organizers had to stall the start because some unlucky dude had his car
towed for parking it on the course. The start was kinda hairy with 90 people
trying to get into the front before the first turn, but luckily no one
screwed up and crashed. After like 3 laps the pack started breaking apart.
The pack split right in front of me and I had to hammer to get back on. This
happened a couple times, and finally I wasnt able to get back on. I rode
like 5-6 laps by myself trying to get back on, and a guy caught up with me.
We were about to start working together to make a attempt to catch back on,
but right after he caught up a official pulled us. It was kinda weird that
he pulled us out because we were not gonna be lapped; the main group was
nowhere in sight. I think they should have let us finish the race; we were
about 12 laps from the finish. I mean, this is a cat 4/5 race, shouldnt they
let beginner riders get the experience, and let them at least try to finish
until they get lapped. Overall, besides getting pulled, it was a good
experience and I hope to do better next year and actually finish the race. thanks Greg

I personally enjoyed this race. As usual I started in a bad position, and
ended up way to the back of the pack with people in the 13-14 category. I
basically spent most of the begining bridging gaps by myself and another kid
in an orange jersey. On the last lap as I was climbing the hill with a group
of 6-7 or so and the pack lapped us. Suddenly without warning a wall of
riders passes us. I managed to join after the u turn and hold my place mid
pack or so until the finish where I had to sprint for what turned out to be
ninth in my age group. Next time I will try to get a better position in the
start so I can stick with the the pack and fairly finish the race.
