I got my first road bike back in May 2003. I wasn’t really sure if I’d like it, but my Dad rode, so I figured it might be fun. I had already been playing soccer for eight years and I wasn’t sure if I’d have time for another sport. I went to a bike handling clinic with my Dad and we met a couple of women racers who suggested that I check out the Tieni Duro Juniors team. I was intimidated at first, but once I got to know the guys on the team I relaxed. I remember I really didn’t want to race at first, but once I did a few, I got hooked and I couldn’t stop. I dropped soccer and concentrated on cycling. I entered a lot of races in 2004, which I didn’t place too well in, but I got the feel of the different courses and gained some experience. When I wasn’t racing, I was riding with the team or my Dad. That’s a big reason that I like Tieni Duro. Every Sunday, rain or shine, there are several mentors (Tieni Duro adult riders), and plenty of juniors of various skill levels, who go on a 40 to 60 mile ride. The ride is always fun, challenging, and a good time to see your teammates.
In my first season on the team, I couldn’t imagine why the older riders were racing so much. Now I understand why. In 2005 I raced almost every weekend, it was great! Thanks to experience, better training, and a little more testosterone, I finished well enough this year that I’ll upgrade to Cat 3 in early 2006. I got so into cycling that I wanted to try different types. Tieni Duro had a track day down at Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose. I liked it so much that I bought a track bike. I started riding track in the summer, entered districts, and had a blast. On one of the training days I crashed and broke my collarbone. While I was recovering I lifted weights with my legs and rode on a recumbent bike to stay fit. I was itching to get back, so as soon as the doctors gave me the okay I entered the Timpani Criterium. On the last lap I was behind another rider who crashed and I re-broke my collarbone. This time I was a little smarter and I’m waiting until February to race again. I’m enjoying the off season training, riding both my fixed gear and road bikes. I’m pretty psyched about the 2006 season because we’re going to have a really competitive team and I can’t wait to race with them. Thanks to everyone involved with Tieni Duro for giving me the chance to ride and race with a great group.
